This holiday was reportedly created in 1979 by WT Rabe in response to the growing popularity of jogging. The origin of the day is believed to trace back to the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in Michigan, USA, where Rabe worked.

Explaining the concept, Dr. Nishant Gemini, HOD, Physical Therapy, Primus Super Specialty Hospital said: ‘Sauntering refers to a leisurely, relaxed pace or style of walking. It involves walking around at a comfortable speed, with no particular destination or time constraint, and allowing yourself to fully interact with your surroundings.

According to the expert, wandering offers various benefits for mental and physical health. Mentally, it promotes relaxation, reduces stress, and enhances awareness by encouraging you to be fully present in the moment, said Dr. Gemini.

In regards to physical health, wandering provides a low-impact form of exercise, improves cardiovascular health, and can contribute to weight control. It also allows for more exposure to nature and fresh air, which has been linked to improved mood and cognitive function, the expert pointed out.

How to practice?

First of all, you need to choose a pleasant place like a park or a quiet neighborhood and set aside some time for pleasant walks. Focus on the present moment, paying attention to the sights, sounds and sensations around you. Allow yourself to wander without a specific goal in mind. Take deep breaths, relax your body and let go of any frantic thoughts or concerns. Remember to enjoy the ride rather than rushing to a destination, she said.
